Customize the workspace

You can modify the NVivo interface to create more space for specific tasks or show the information most useful to you.

Ribbon

Minimize ribbon

You can collapse the NVivo ribbon so that only the tab names are visible, creating more working space in the List and Detail Views. Open the tabs by clicking on the tab names.

  1. In the Quick Access Toolbar menu click Minimize Ribbon.
    Click again to restore the ribbon.

Quick Access Toolbar

The Quick Access Toolbar allows you to place frequently used commands where they can be accessed without having to open a ribbon or menu. All NVivo commands are available for placement in the toolbar.

The toolbar can be displayed above the ribbon, on the right of the NVivo window, or below the ribbon (left-justified).

To configure the Quick Access Toolbar:

  1. Click the dropdown symbol in the toolbar and select commands to add or remove.
    Access every command in NVivo and order them from the More Commands option.
  2. Click Show Below the Ribbon to move the Quick Access Toolbar below the ribbon, creating more room for saved commands.

Navigation View

Show/collapse

You can collapse the Navigation View to create more working space in the NVivo window:

  1. On the Home tab, click Workspace. In the Navigation View section, select Open or Dashboard Mode.

Shortcut Click the A less than symbol representing hide at the top-right of the Navigation View to collapse it. Click anywhere in the collapsed panel to reopen it.

Create folders

Some items in the Navigation View are like single files, containing data in a single interface. Others are like folders, containing files. For the latter you can create subfolders to organize your data in a way that suits you.

To create a Navigation View subfolder:

  1. Select the Navigation View item you want to create a subfolder for, e.g. Files in the Data category.
  2. On the Create tab, click Folder.
    Enter a folder name and optional description, and click OK.

Pin items to Quick Access

You can place Navigation View items in the Quick Access section at the top of the view, where you can quickly find them:

  1. Drag and drop items from the Navigation View into the Quick Access area.

Pinning an item in Quick Access does not move it from its original location.

List View

Sort items

Sort the items in the List View by clicking the header of the column you want to sort by—for example, to sort items by their creation date, click the Created on column header. Items are organized numerically or alphabetically. Click a second time to reverse the order.

When you work with codes and the members of sets in the List View, you can set your own custom order. Organize codes and cases

Show, hide or re-order columns

  1. Click in the List View.
  2. On the Home tab, click Workspace > Customize. The Customize Current View dialog box opens.
  3. Use the arrows to select and order the columns.

Click Reset to restore the default List View columns.

  1. Click in the List View.
  2. On the Home tab, click Workspace > Reset all Customizations.

Show thumbnails

By default, items in the List View are shown in a table—one row per item with item properties in the columns. Optionally, you can display the items as thumbnails. This can be useful when you are working with pictures and videos.

  1. Select the required folder in the Navigation View.
  2. Click in the List View.
  3. On the Home tab, click Workspace, and in the List View section, click Small, Medium or Large Thumbnails.

The setting is for the selected folder only.

Detail View

Change Detail View position

You can display the Detail View to the right of or below the List View. When you are using drag and drop to code into the List View, or want to show coding stripes, it is best to position it on the right. When you use the Quick Coding bar, or if you are working with queries, it is best at the bottom.

  1. On the Home tab, click Workspace and in the Detail View section, select Right or Bottom.

Undock the Detail View

You can open the Detail View in its own window.

  1. Open a project item in the Detail View.
  2. On the Home tab, click Workspace > Undock.
    Alternatively, click the icon in the top right of the Detail View .

To re-dock, in the Detail-View window Home tab, click Workspace > Dock, or click the top-right icon in the window .

Show or hide the Find bar

Show or hide the Find bar at the top of the List View Find bar:

  1. On the Home tab, click Workspace > Find.

Show, hide or move the Quick Coding bar

By default, the Quick Coding bar is displayed at the bottom of the Detail View when you open a file, code or case. You can hide the bar, or undock it and place it in a convenient position over the NVivo window.

  1. Open a file, case or code.
  2. On the ribbon tab for the file, case or code, click Quick Coding and select Hide, Docked or Floating.
