Create a new project

You can create a new project (saved as a .nvpx file) on your computer.

Create a new project

  1. Click Create New Project in the Welcome screen or if a project is open, File > New Project.

    A New Project dialog is displayed.

  2. In the Save As field, type a name for the project file.
  3. Optionally add tags to help find the file.
  4. Optionally change the file location.
  5. Enter the project name in the Project Title field. The title does not have to match the file name but cannot include the following characters: \ : / * ? " < > | .
  6. Optionally enter a project description.
  7. Select a text content language.
    This is the language that the data files in the project (or most of them) will be in. It selects the correct dictionaries and other resources for textual analysis (e.g.text search) on your data.
  8. Optionally turn on autosaving. Check Autosave project to turn on autosaving. (You can change this setting at any time in File > Project Properties > General)
    1. with the setting off, you must save projects manually. If you close a project with unsaved changes you are prompted whether you want to save the changes or not,
    2. with the setting on, NVivo automatically saves the project every 5 minutes. If you close a project with unsaved changes they are saved automatically before closing.
  9. Click Create Project.

Save a copy of your project

To create a copy of your project:

  1. Save the current project that you want to copy.
  2. Close the NVivo application.
  3. Navigate to the location where the project is stored using the Mac Finder, right-click on the project file and select Duplicate.
  4. You can then rename the copied project.

NOTE   Saving a project file with a different name does not change the project name. To update the project name, open the copied project, select File > Project Properties, and provide a new project name in the Project Title field.
