Run reports
Formatted Reports contain summary information about your project that you can view and print. You can periodically check on the progress of your project by running reports.
A text report lets you export a collection of data to a text, Excel or XML file—you can use this data for complementary analysis in other applications.
You can run both the formatted reports and text reports from List View including:
NOTE When you run a formatted report, the results are displayed in Detail View. When you run a text report, the results are saved to a file that you can work with in another application.
NVivo's predefined reports
NVivo comes with a set of predefined reports that you can use—for example, you can run a report on the coding in your project.

Coding Summary by Code | Lists your codes or relationships and the files that are coded to them. Any text that is coded is included in the report. This report can help you to review your coding. |
Coding Summary by File | Lists your files and the codes or relationships that code them. Any text content that is coded is included in the report. This report can help you to review your coding. |
Case Classification Summary | Lists the classifications and attributes for the cases in your project. You can extract this data for complementary analysis in statistical applications. |
Coding Structure | Lists the codes in your project with information about the folder location, aggregate status, nickname and color. |
Code Summary | Lists the codes or relationships including statistical information—for example, the total words coded. This can help you to see which themes or ideas are occurring more than others. |
Project Summary | Displays the properties of your project (for example, project name and description), the user profiles associated with your project, and lists all the items within your project. |
File Classification | Lists the classifications and attributes for the files in your project. You may want to extract this data for use in other applications that support text (.txt), Excel (.xls, .xlsx) or XML (.xml) file formats. |
File Summary | Lists the files in the project. For each file, it shows file properties and statistics—for example, number of coding references. Statistics vary depending on the type of file. |
User defined custom reports
You can use either the Report Wizards or the Report Designer to build your own custom formatted or text reports. For more information on how to create customized reports, see Create reports.
How to run a report?
The following sections provides steps to run a formatted and text report.
Run a formatted report
- In Navigation View, expand the Reports folder and then select the Formatted Reports folder.
- In List View, double-click the report you want to run.
- If the report includes filters, the Filter Options dialog box is displayed so you can apply filters to the data.
- Click OK. The report results are displayed in Detail View.
Run a text report
When you run a text report, the results are not displayed on screen, they are exported to the specified file type— text file (.txt), Excel file (.xls, .xlsx) or XML file (.xml). You can open the file in other applications that support the selected format.
- In Navigation View, expand the Reports folder and then select the Text Reports folder.
- In List View, double-click the report you want to run.
- If the report includes filters, the Filter Options dialog box is displayed so you can apply filters to the data.
- Click OK.
- (Optional) Choose a different location and file name.
- In the Save as type box, choose the file format for the report.
- Click Save.
