NVivo Transcription

NVivo Transcription is an automated, cloud-based transcription service integrated into NVivo 12. It allows you to send media files for transcription directly from (Undefined variable: Primary.NVivo), returning the transcripts embedded with the media files they were created from Audio and video files (but see exceptions to integration with NVivo 12 below).

NVivo Transcription is a paid service, additional to NVivo (see QSR website or Transcription online Help for more information). You must have pay-as-you-go credits to use it with NVivo 12.

IMPORTANT   Direct integration with Transcription, as described above, is only available for NVivo version 12 if you are in Europe, Africa or the Middle East, or your first Transcription purchase was before 18 March 2020 (contact Technical Support with any difficulties). Other NVivo 12 users can transcribe their files on the Transcription website then import the transcripts into NVivo manually Import transcripts.

Use NVivo Transcription to transcribe media files from NVivo 12

  1. Open the project containing the audio or video files you want to transcribe. On the Create tab, click NVivo Transcription.

If you are not already logged into a myLumivero account (shown in the top right of the Transcription tab), log in now. If you need to change accounts, log out and back in again with the correct account.

  2. In the Transcription tab, click Add Files or drag and drop from the List View to add audio or video files to transcribe. Once added, the files automatically upload to NVivo Transcription on the web.

NOTE  You can populate the Transcription tab before you open it—open a media file that you want to transcribe before opening the tab, or Control-click the file in the List View and select NVivo Transcription.

The duration of each file is displayed. The minutes of transcription time available are shown at the top of the tab (refreshed every fifteen minutes).

  3. When the files have uploaded select the language being spoken in each, then click Transcribe.

  4. Click Refresh to check when transcription has finished.

  5. When transcription is finished click Review transcript to open the transcript in the web editor (the first time you do this you may need to log into your myLumivero account again).

  6. Edit the transcript using the web editor, making corrections as necessary and optionally adding speaker names.

(See directions for the editor in the Transcription Help, here.)

  7. Return to the NVivo Transcription tab in NVivo and click Import.

The transcript is imported and embedded as the transcript of the media file, which opens automatically (if not already open).

  8. If necessary you can edit further in NVivo Audio and video transcripts.
